About the Ropeway

Darjeeling Ropeway — Rangeet Valley Passenger Cable Car

The Darjeeling Ropeway, also known as the Rangeet Valley Passenger Cable Car, is one of the most scenic cable car rides in India and a star attraction of Darjeeling.

Built in 1968 as India’s first passenger ropeway, it was initially created to connect the tea gardens of the Rangeet Valley. It was later revamped in 1998 and, after a safety overhaul, reopened to the public in February 2012 with upgraded systems and modern operating standards.

Today, the ropeway is operated under the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation (WBFDCL) in collaboration with Conveyor and Ropeway Services Pvt. Ltd. (CRSPL), a specialist ropeway company.

Location Singamari (North Point), about 2–3 km from Darjeeling town centre.
Altitude Starts above 2,000 m and descends towards the Rangeet / Ramman river valley.
Route & Cars Approx. 2.3–2.5 km each way with multiple enclosed gondolas.
Ride Time Around 15 minutes one way, 30–40 minutes for a complete to-and-fro.
Perfect for families, couples & first-time visitors

The route gently glides from Singamari down over lush tea gardens, forested ridges and the valley, with occasional glimpses of the snow-clad Kanchenjunga range on clear days.

The ride currently operates as a to-and-fro experience: you typically remain seated in the gondola at the lower station as it reverses direction and brings you back up to Singamari, offering a fresh perspective on the same dramatic landscape.
